Jedanaesti BOOKSTAN u Sarajevu: Književnost u „gluho doba“
The BOOKSTAN International Literature Festival, now in its eleventh edition, is once again transforming Sarajevo into the heart of the regional literary scene. Under its recognizable slogan "NO EAST. NO WEST.", the festival will take place from July 1st to 4th, 2026, featuring a rich program focused on this year’s central theme: "Gluho doba" / "Devil's Hour." The festival is organized by the Buybook publishing house, with the visual identity created by Dino Hujić.
In an era marked by revisionism, distorted memories of the past, and the increasing validation of lies at the expense of truth, BOOKSTAN explores the role of literature as a space for meaning, hope, and critical reflection. By gathering diverse voices and perspectives, the festival continues its mission of fostering dialogue beyond fixed values and binary divisions, offering literature as a way to confront trauma, question reality, and imagine more humane futures.
"In Bosnia and Herzegovina's society—and for the last decade, in the wider region as well—hope is an essential tool for survival, a principle that does not allow for surrender," points out Lamija Milišić, the festival's executive director. "To tame the mistrust of one's surroundings caused by trauma, it is necessary to verbalize that trauma; scientific, political, or religious dogmas and doctrines can help with that—or alternatively, art and literature."
During the four days of the festival, Sarajevo will host numerous local, regional, and international authors. Through panels, book promotions, and discussions, they will attempt to interpret the "Devil’s Hour" in which we live. For the eleventh consecutive year, BOOKSTAN remains faithful to its mission of exploring identity, collective and personal memory, and the power of the written word. Visit Sarajevo’s "Land of Books" and be part of a dialogue that seeks truth where it is hardest to find—in the silence of the Devil’s Hour.
